Slow offensive starts are putting too much pressure on the Seattle defense, right? Yes, but ... the Seahawks have already matched their 2005 total for first-quarter points (93). Finishing strong is the problem, then, right? Yes, but ... the current team already has more fourth-quarter points than the 2005 team (94-87). The chart shows how projected 2006 totals compare to last season.
The difference is in those middle quarters. The Hawks are no longer finding any sort of peak efficiency. Mike Holmgren said early in the season that he felt the offense would work its way out of this and finish among the league leaders again. He might have been right had Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander been healthy all season. Perhaps their injuries made it tougher to build the momentum needed to overcome some of the usual bumps in the road. Getting those guys back hasn't made everything OK again. I thought it would have helped more.
