Cornerback Kevin Hobbs was brought up off the practice squad after Alvin Pearman had his season ended by a knee injury. I sat down with Hobbs for a few minutes. Here is the transcript of the interview:
Q: Can you explain your emotions once you officially heard you being called up from the practice squad? A: "Words can't explain it. This will be my first time because as a kid you dream about playing in the NFL. I was on practice squad last year, and the beginning of this year. But to finally be able to go out and feel my dream, I am excited."
Q: Do you have a sense of whether you will get time or not? A: "I know I will contribute on special teams. In the dime package, when they go to four wide we will call a dime. But I will be a big contributor on special teams. Right now I'm starting on kickoff team and on punt return team as one of the jammers."
Q: What is it like to practice with the team all week and then not get to travel with your teammates? A: "It is kind of tough. It is tough mentally. You practice hard all week and it messes with you mentally when you can't travel. You are with the guys all week, everybody does a good job of including me, especially the D backs, making me feel I'm a part of the team even though I don't get to travel. And I tell those guys, 'I am with you in spirit, go out and play like you know how to play.'"
Q: This is your first regular-season game? A: "Yep. First regular-season game. Away game too. I'll be a little nervous. Everybody is a little nervous. If you are not nervous something is wrong. I will take that nervousness and go out and play football like I have since I was six."
Q: How about the life of a practice squad guy, where you have a smaller paycheck and then a larger paycheck, you might go back to the practice squad once Josh (Wilson) gets healthy, there is a lot of uncertainty? A: "Right now I try not to think about it. I am trying to focus on this week and this week alone. I don't know what is going to happen in the future so the only thing I can focus on is doing my job and contributing to help this team win and the other stuff that I can't really control I don't worry about. I don't know what's going to happen when Josh gets healthy. Hopefully I will make some plays so that if it does get to that point, the coaches have to say, 'We have to keep Hobbs up.'"
