How physically draining was it out there in the second half?
You know we didn't play good football so we were on the field longer than we should have been. You can't stop them on third downs and then they get a new set of downs, then you play more plays. We brought that on ourselves. We're going to be frustrated when we see this film tomorrow.
How draining is it when you give up those third-and-long plays?
Well you obviously don't want to give those plays up but when you get a new set of downs that gives you another opportunity to get off of the field. The key is to keep them out of the red zone and then ultimately out of the end zone but we kind of broke down at the crucial points to keep drives going. I have to give them credit because Ben (Roethlisberger) scrambled to make some plays and they broke some runs so I don't want to take anything away from them but still we are a better defense than that.
Never miss a local story.
What did the coach say to you after the game?
It wasn't a good enough effort but we got beat by a very good football team. In order to beat good football teams down the road we have to play better, find ways to improve, and that is everybody in this locker room to a man.
How tough was it in the second half being on the sideline so long?
Well it was really tough the whole game. They came out with a really good game plan and they took away things that we are comfortable doing so we had to go to other things and they still didn't work. We have to find a way to keep our defense off of the field because they played too many snaps.
How different might this game have been if you had put points up at the end of the first half?
I don't know but it would have been interesting. I think that we were dead even there until they got that one play. I think that if we could have gotten seven right there before the end of the half then the outcome could have been different. They really came out in the second half and controlled the ball, so that is just the way that the cookie crumbled today.
What adjustments need to be made next week before New Orleans?
We just have to circle the wagons. We have to believe in one another and just keep believing in one another; know that we have to rely on our offense our defense and our kicking game to win each week.
They were missing some guys there in their backfield and yet Matt (Hasselbeck) still couldn't find anybody open?
At this level everybody is on a full scholarship. There really is not a bad football player in the NFL and they really came out and proved that today. They didn't have Hines Ward and they didn't have Troy Polamalu and with those two guys out we really thought that we had a great chance to pull off a win here.
Have you ever been on the field that long?
It has been a while since I have been on the field for that long. The biggest thing is that we have to get off of the field and we didn't do a good enough job of that today. When we look at film Monday we can look at that and see what we have to do.
Was it huge not getting points at the end of the first half?
It probably was a big difference in the game but we still have to find a way to get off the field on third down to give our offense a couple more opportunities to get better field position.
What did you think of that long drive?
Like I said before we had a couple of opportunities to get them down but we didn't and we also had a couple of pressures but we didn't get there. That gave them enough opportunity to get some receivers open and buy some more time. The receivers did a nice job getting to the stick.
Was it tough not having Mack Strong and Deion Branch for much of the game?
It is tough when you lose a starter, especially when he is the caliber of Deion. At the same time the rest of us have to step up and make plays. The guys that they are putting in there have to be ready. We have enough talent so we cannot use that as an excuse. Although it is a lot of plays lost when you lose a guy like Deion.
How draining was it to go into the locker room with no points from
that last drive of the first half?
It was a tough situation, but at the same time we knew that we could bounce back. It was a tough first half with not a lot of scoring until they had the big run right before the half. We had a chance to go down and tie it up but we came up empty. We felt good going into the second half but we just didn't execute.
Prime time game next week against New Orleans; are you already thinking about that?
Absolutely after a loss like this. We have to let this one soak in and then look at the film and move on. We still have a lot of football to play.
