Mike Holmgren said he has not yet made a decision about who will start at split end, but he did say he wanted to give Courtney Taylor more of an opportunity because of his explosiveness. He said he will line up Nate Burleson, DJ Hackett and Taylor there this week in practice and see who has the best week before making a decision.
Holmgren said Ellis Wyms will get more time at defensive tackle behind Brandon Mebane and it remains to be seen how quickly Howard Green picks things up before they can determine how much of an impact he will have.
Of the running game, Holmgren said he does not forsee doing anything drastic along the offensive front like changing starting lineups. For one, he said, there is not a great deal of depth there and so their choices are limited. Secondly, he thinks that some of the mistakes are being made because of inexperience, and to suddenly remove a player from the field and not allow him to work through some of the mistakes is defeating the long-term purpose. They are called growing pains for a reason.
He said he has not yet determined how much time, if any, he will give players during the bye week. He said it is hard to treat this season like recent seasons because they are coming off two straight difficult defeats. This is not to say he will not give them the week off, but that he has not yet made a decision. He likely won't until Monday morning, after seeing the outcome of Sunday's game and then meeting with coaches.
He said once again the one play he second guesses himself on from the Saints loss is the fourth down draw play at the end of the game. He guessed they would be a soft defense to take away the seams to the end zone, and they instead pressured the offense. He wishes he could have that call back.
Re: the Rams, he said he used up all his "Don't get cocky because we are playing a winless team" speeches last week. He said the players know. They know that they are struggling and they know the Rams have talent so there is not much he can say to motivate them other than to prepare them properly.
I'll post some of the quotes a little later once they are transcribed.
