Holmgren was asked about kicking to keep the ball away from Devin Hester. He responded with this story:
There's a number of things you could try to do when you play against a great player like that. I told you the story before about Mel Gray. And I told Nolan Cromwell who was the special teams coach at the time, I do not want him touching the ball. Nolan is a good guy. You all know Nolan. And the whole game, we're kicking it short we're kicking it out of bounds. Everything is going fine. We had just scored a touchdown and Nolan got a little cocky. It was in the fourth quarter. I go around to get a drink of water. We kick off, I'm thinking it's going to be one of those pop ups or something, I turn around just as Mel Gray is running by me for a touchdown. I go…I'm looking for Nolan and he's hiding from me, I go, 'What did you do?' He says, 'We were covering so well.' It's like fielding a punt on the 10. Even coaches, it's like, 'Ah, we can do this.' I'd rather he not touch the ball though. Devin Hester. And I'm sure we'll have some thing to try and make that happen."
