We just got off teleconference calls with Bears coach Lovie Smith and linebacker Brian Urlacher, neither of whom said a great deal. Smith declined to say who was going to start at QB this week, or to even tell us who practiced. He said he would release that information later in the day, which I assume means their injury report, but that is not likely to indicate specifics about the practice. Smith played down the QB controversy, saying it is something that goes on in a lot of cities and something he has to deal with. He said the problems with the team's running game this season has been sort of the same as Seattle's, inconsistency that needs to be fixed. Urlacher said that the only difference in their defense is that they are not performing as well. He didn't make excuses about injuries or personnel but said they are not as good this year. Urlacher also said that if he was a coach, he would not kick to Devin Hester. Lovie said Hester is the best return man he has ever seen. About memories of last year's playoff game, Urlacher said, "We won. That's it."
Mike Holmgren's press conference is at noon. I'll have updates from that.
