Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren said after practice today that starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will not play against San Diego on Monday, and probably will not make the trip.
Hasselbeck again did not practice with the team today because of a tight back, and hasn't practiced with the team since Monday. Holmgren said Charlie Frye will start again this week, and Seneca Wallace may see some time against the Chargers.
"He's just got to let it calm down a bit," Holmgren said about Hasselbeck's back. "He's much better today. He told me that. As I said yesterday or the day before, he's got to be ready to play in the opening game."
Frye took most of the snaps with the first team, and Seneca Wallace also took some snaps. I talked to Wallace after practice and he said his legs are fine and he'll be ready to go if Holmgren calls his number on Monday.
Never miss a local story.
Two other big guys Holmgren was encouraged to see working through team drills were center Chris Spencer and rookie defensive lineman Red Bryant.
Spencer worked with the first unit during team drills for the first time this year, and looked OK coming off the line. He had a few muffled snapped exchanges and worked with Frye on snaps after practice.
Holmgren said Spencer probably will not play against San Diego, but may see time in the final preseason game against Oakland to get some game situations in before the regular-season opener.
Listen to Spencer talk about his situation here.
Bryant also looked good defensively, but Holmgren said Bryant probably will sit out the San Diego game as well.
"I like Red," Holmgren said. "He is a great, young guy and a big, strong player that we looked at as contributing this year.
"It's unfortunate that he got hurt, but now he's feeling good and he's back. So I have my fingers crossed that he can get some playing time and feel good before the opener."
Seattle went through several different game situations during team drills, but the focus was on learning and making sure both the offense and defense got to the right positions against their perspective scout squads. Practice only lasted a little over an hour, as Holmgren tries to get his team through the week without suffering more injuries.
Rookie kicker Brandon Coutu also did not practice this afternoon. We're still waiting to hear the extent of the injury.
Orlindo Mare kicked field goals during the special teams portion of the practice, and only missed on kick that looked to be beyond 50 yards.
