€œClearly it feels a lot better this week than it has the last couple. I thought the guys responded very well this week. As I told you, they practiced well. I think they played very hard today and this game, unlike the last couple, we were able to come up with the big plays: [Josh Wilson’s] interception, of course, [Leonard] Weaver’s two big plays and that was really the difference. We need to have those next week and today we got it. I think our defense played a much better game against them down here than we did in Seattle. I thought we rallied pretty good. I thought we did a decent job on [Isaac] Bruce, he really had a great game against us up there. [Frank] Gore is always a tough one, so you do the best you can with him, but it’s a great win. I’m very happy for the players. As hard as they work, they deserve a little ice cream so it was good.â€
RE: How deserving is Leonard to have two touchdowns, as hard as he works?
“It’s good. He does the dirty work. He’s blocking most of the time, so when those guys that are unselfish get a chance to touch the ball and have some fun, I feel that much better. Clearly today he had a big game.â€
RE: Why did the plays in which Leonard scored two touchdowns work as well as they did?
“I think the first one they blitzed us and Seneca [Wallace] did a nice job of getting us a little extra time. You have to give him credit on the play. And then Weaver, when he got his hands on the ball, he had a nice run.â€
Never miss a local story.
RE: So that’s what opened up the middle of the field?
“Seneca set up both plays, because both plays were not thrown exactly on time. The quarterback moved just a little bit, created something and we got the play.â€
RE: Did Leonard show a little more niftiness than you expected?
“Remember when he was a rookie and first with us? He surprised us a little bit with how he carried the ball; he’s a former tight end. We had him running a lot at halfback. When he does get a chance, it doesn’t surprise me really. I think the conversion he’s made to fullback hasn’t been quite as much fun because he blocks a lot more. So it doesn’t really surprise me. He made two really nice plays.â€
RE: Can you comment on Seneca’s game?
“I thought he was much improved over last week. I think he was feeling better, his leg was better. I think he settled down. As the game progressed, I think he got better. Early on he made some nice plays, but I think for a little while we missed on a couple of things that should have happened. And he knew that, and he came over and said, ‘Stay with me now.’ Very mature way of handling it. And so I tried to be as mature as my player. So I thought we worked well. I thought I helped him a little bit and today he certainly helped his team.â€
RE: What did the big plays by the defense do for the defense?
“Well, I certainly think that that’s how our defense has really played in the last couple of years. We’ve taken the ball away a number of times. They’ve created a lot of things for our offense. It was necessary and good for us and we played well when that happened. Today was more like that. Those types of things, I find, come in bunches â€" turnovers and takeaways and things like that. I’m hopeful that they can use this game as a springboard and continue to play very opportunistically like they did today.â€
