Two days, two announced signings of defensive players.
And there's more to be done, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.
Carroll and general manager John Schneider have been at this since the offseason, signing Michael Bennett, then Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, and Doug Baldwin.
They added to that Thursday with the announced extension for K.J. Wright and again with Cliff Avril today.
"We have been working on these for some times but we were coming to the end (of the business year) and we wanted to get everything in line as best as we can," Carroll said.
"We have a huge plan, and it goes on. And we have been at it the whole time. John (Schneider) has done a fantastic job orchestrating it and keeping us on track and giving us this sense of stability we are trying to create."
The Avril deal proved he was part of the Seahawks' "core" that they've been trying to keep. Linebacker Bobby Wagner and quarterback Russell Wilson have deals expiring at the end of the 2015 season and they figure to be next in line.
"So many of these things have been planned for some time, it was just a matter of timing and there's always questions," Carroll said. "But it's been a direction that we set our course on and we've been able to accomplish it and we're doing it. We are not done. There are more things to do here."
Here's the rest of what Carroll had to say after practice today:
I think we have been able to make a couple really strong statements with KJ and Cliff the past couples days that we’ve been following what we’ve been trying to do the whole time. WE found the core guys that we really liked and we are tyring to keep them here, keep them together. With the oppotuntity here to close at the end of the year we had the chance to do this financially So we jumped at the chance.
Both of these guys are great team players. They ‘ve been in it in every aspect o four program and have done everything that we have asked of them. It’s great to be able to reward those guys and really create more stability for the future and particularity we have a chance to do something on defense back to back you can see how much we have leaned on our D and how much we believe in it. We have a chance to be together for a long time and that’s a big statement and a big commitment and we are really happy to do that.
What John and I thought we wwere going to create here is a real stable program. We’ve told these guys for years, at least four years of tis message, that the core is here and we want to keep it together and see how far we can take it. WE are proud to be able to do that.
It’s really just because we are getting to the end of the business year. WE have been working on these for some time but we were coming to the end of that and we wanted to get everything in line as best as we can. As you know, we have a huge plan and it goes on and we have been at it the whole time. John has done a fantastic job of orchestrating it and keeping us on track and giving us a chance to give us this sense of stability we are trying to create.
I give John a ton of credit in formulating the plan, not just in finding the players but mapping it out and the process of it. Really, so many of these thigns have been planned for some time. It was just a matter of timing and there’s always questions. But it’s been a direction that we set our course on and we’ve bene able to accomplish it and we’re doing it. WE are not done. There are more thigs to do here as we finish now and when we get into the offeseaosn there is a ton of stuff to keep moving in the direction that supports stability and the confidence we have in our players and the bleifve ind where we are going and the direction and all that.
What’s important about that is doing what you say and backing that up. And we’ve been able to do that. Our players have confidence in what we are doing football wise. And they are leaning to have confidence in the administration stuff as well because we are so clear. John and I feel really good about standing for that: Doing what we say and coming through. It’s really important to us. We haven’t really taken a step back too many times and we feel really good about that.
For me, really John keeps me abreast and Matt Thomas, they keep me abreast on what’s going on and we are talking about it. We are going at it hand in hand. But the actual dealing of it, Matt Thomas does that and John when appropriate. But we are right there. We are doing it in an ongoing fashion. I’m involved, but I’m not doing the negotiating at all.
Did the way you’ve seen the defense play this season reinforce this?
No. We’ve counted on our guys to play well and give us the kind of performance and spirit that we are all about for some time now. Nothing has changed over the course of the season.
Preparation this week for Cardinals:
It’s really exciting right now. It’s really fun to be involved right now and going for it with all that lies out there for us. Each week becomes another event. IT feels like it’s a championship game time. That’s the way we have always talked and prepared so when we get here we can handle it really well. The guys are having a blast. They had fun int eh practice, in the meetings, they are looking forward to the learning and they are executing on the field. We are ready to go and we are ready to play.
