A fourth round pick from last year and a fifth round pick from this year were among the group of players the Seattle Seahawks released in order to get down to the league’s 53-man roster limit heading into the team’s season opener at Arizona next week.
Other surprises include the release of defensive back Phillip Adams, who had been working at cornerback behind Brandon Browner with the second unit.
And offensive lineman James Carpenter, who spent the entire training camp on the physically unable to perform list rehabbing from an ACL knee injury suffered last November, will begin the season on the active roster.
All players waived today are eligible to be claimed off waivers by other NFL teams at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Teams can start setting practice squads at that time, once waiver claims have been settled.
Georgia product Kris Durham was one of the players cut by Seattle today. The 6-foot-6 receiver offered good speed to go along with good size, but struggled to stay healthy during his two years with the Seahawks.
Durham, a fourth round pick by Seattle last year, was only active for three games his rookie season, finishing with three receptions for 30 yards. Durham went on the season-ending injured reserve because he needed shoulder surgery.
During training camp this year, Durham flashed at time, but never consistently made enough plays to earn a roster spot.
Idaho linebacker Korey Toomer was a fifth-round selection by Seattle in this year’s draft. Toomer showed speed and athleticism at times during training camp, but wasn’t always assignment correct. And Seattle had more experienced options in Mike Morgan and Malcolm Smith.
Here are the players that have been released according to the Seahawks’ press release: WR Deon Butler, CB Phillip Adams, DE Pierre Allen, LB Allen Bradford, WR Kris Durham, OL Paul Fanaika, OL Rishaw Johnson, WR Jermaine Kearse, LB Kyle Knox, DE Cordarro Law, WR Ricardo Lockette, TE Sean McGrath, OL Kris O'Dowd, QB Josh Portis, S DeShawn Shead, LB Korey Toomer and WR Lavasier Tuinei.
TE Cooper Helfet and RB Vai Taua were waived/injured. LB Matt McCoy was placed on IR. And CB Walter Thurmond was placed on the PUP list.
Offensive lineman Allen Barbre was placed on the reserved/suspended list. Barbre has been suspended for the first four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and does not count against Seattle’s 53-man roster.
