And Mike Williams was not on the injury report today.
I mentioned yesterday that Seattle still had an extra roster spot. The filled it today by adding defensive end Pierre Allen, who was with the team during training camp. It’s an interesting move because I thought they needed an extra pass rusher with their struggles to develop a consistent pass rush, so we’ll see if Allen can work his way onto the active roster.
We talked to Seattle offensive line coach Tom Cable about the team’s success running the ball against Dallas last Sunday, and how that could be a jumping off point for improvement in the running game.
“I’m excited because we took a step in the right direction,” Cable said. “There’s been some signs of it, but no consistency like we had in Dallas. So I think that’s probably the most exciting thing, is a little consistency. But when you look at it, there’s a lot of yards that we left on the field. So it’s got to get a lot better.”
Cable said part of the reason for Seattle’s success is they committed to the running game from start to finish.
“We ran the ball 30 times in a game, which is the most we’ve done all season,” Cable said. “And so part of it is if you’re a runner or a blocker is getting enough looks at an alignment or a slant or a stunt or whatever it is. So it’s a lot of just kind of bringing it together I think as coaches, and then the players executing it and taking a step forward with it.”
And generating that balance is important if Seattle wants to be a playoff team.
“I think it builds a mentality that you want your team to have,” Cable said. “Because when you get late into the season if you can get yourself into the position to become a playoff team or go after your division, you have to be able to do some of those things to win late in the year.”
For Baltimore, center Matt Birk (neck) did not participate in practice.
RB Anthony Allen (thigh), LB Brandon Ayanbadejo (head), LB Dannell Ellerbee (thigh), WR Lee Evans (ankle) and TE Kris Wilson (calf) were limited. And CB Chykie Brown (knee) was a full participant in practice
