Henrik Stenson kept bogeys off his card, earning fame Sunday for a flawless round of golf and a surprising blowout victory in The Players Championship in Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.
The 33-year-old Swede shot a 6-under 66 and was the only player without a bogey in the final round on a treacherous TPC Sawgrass course that featured firm, fast conditions rarely seen this side of a major.
Trailing by five shots, he took advantage of a swift collapse by Alex Cejka, joined the leaders with a birdie from just short of the seventh green and pulled away with a 32 on the back nine when the only drama was the margin of victory.
He wound up four shots clear of Ryder Cup teammate Ian Poulter, who shot a 70 for his best finish on the PGA Tour.
“It’s just going to give me a lot of confidence to go out there and control myself and play as well as I did on the last day at TPC Sawgrass and to hold off such a strong field,” Stenson said. “It’s just going to give me a lot of confidence going into the majors. Obviously, if I can play as well as I did today, I surely can do it on a Sunday at the majors.”
Tiger Woods, who played in the last group, was never a factor. He was part of the six-way tie that included Stenson, but finished with a 73 to finish alone in eighth.
“When you’re playing a golf course like this and you don’t have it, and the greens are this fast and this hard, you can shoot some pretty high numbers,” he said.
Stenson, who won for the 10th time in his career worldwide, finished at 12-under 276 and earned $1.71 million. He will move to No. 5 in the world ranking.
“I was thinking this that if I could finish in front of Tiger, that might be good enough,” Poulter said. “But I wasn’t expecting someone to go out there and shoot 66.”
Cejka made only one birdie and shot a 79.

Tracking Ryan Moore
Last week: PGA Tour’s Players Championship, TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Final-round score: 12-over-par 84.
Position: Moore (10-over 298) finished 70th, 22 strokes behind winner Henrik Stenson of Sweden (276).
Recap: For the third time in 103 PGA Tour starts, Moore shot a round of 80 or higher. And this 84 – charged by a front-nine 46 – was his highest by four strokes, causing him to drop 42 spots on the leaderboard to finish last among golfers who made the final-day cut. His biggest adventure came on the par-4 fourth, where he hit his approach into a pond and visited two greenside bunkers en route to a quadruple-bogey 8.
Par-3 17th: After an 11-for-11 streak in the event, Moore dumped it in the water at the famous island green for the first time in his career. His tee shot missed right, costing him the last of his four double bogeys.
Next: Byron Nelson Championship, May 21-24, TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving, Texas.
