FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After shooting 65 in the second round of the U.S. Open, Nick Taylor had something better in mind than what he got Sunday.
Taylor’s 5-over 75 in the third round dropped him well down the leaderboard in the rain-challenged championship, which should finish today.
“It’s pretty disappointing,” Taylor said before going back out on Bethpage Black late Sunday to begin his final round.
The difference, Taylor suggested, between the second and third rounds wasn’t as dramatic as the 10-stroke margin.
“I didn’t play that much different,” he said. “I just hit a few bad shots into some bad places … and I didn’t make many putts.”
The disappointment continued as Taylor played the first 10 holes in the fourth round at 3-over before darkness suspended play. He will resume play today at 6-over for the championship.
Despite the conditions, Taylor embraced the loud galleries.
“It was more exciting than it was pressure,” he said. “They knew I was from Washington so I was getting some, ‘Go Huskies.’ ”
Meanwhile, Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley shot his second straight 4-over 74, then played even through four holes in fourth round and is at 8-over.
Puyallup’s Ryan Moore shot a 2-over 72 in the third round, then started his fourth round with his first double bogey of the week.
He birdied No. 4 and No. 6 to regain those strokes just before play was called. He is 1-over as play resumes today.
