Winfield says playing Hawks is ‘game-time decision’
NFL: Vikings expect to be spread a little thin at cornerback Sunday

Antoine Winfield said he made significant progress in practice this week, but the Vikings’ cornerback was listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against Seattle because of a right foot injury.

Winfield said his foot felt good after Friday’s workout. In particular, Winfield said he experienced no pain when planting and making a cut, something that gave him problems last week.

Winfield has missed three-plus games after injuring his foot Oct. 18 against Baltimore.

“I’ll get out there and do some work Sunday morning and see how it feels (before the game),” Winfield said. “If it’s good, I’ll be out there. Game-time decision.”

The Vikings might be thin at cornerback. Karl Paymah (ankle) is questionable. Benny Sapp left last week’s game because of a groin injury, but he is listed as probable.

Receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring) also is questionable. Backup defensive end Jayme Mitchell missed Friday’s practice because of illness.

LIFE GOES ON FOR RICH COACH

Perhaps if Brad Childress had received a new contract during the offseason he would have found time to celebrate. But when the Vikings’ coach arrived home Thursday night after signing an extension through the 2013 season he took little time to reflect on what had just happened.

“I talked to my wife for a couple of minutes, didn’t even turn on the TV, got into bed, turned on Letterman and the next thing I knew, I was finished,” Childress said.

On Thursday, Childress got a deal that will pay him a reported $4 million to $5 million per season.

GIANTS LB PIERCE OUT INDEFINITELY

New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce is out indefinitely after an MRI exam surprisingly revealed a bulging disk in his neck.

The Giants said their defensive captain underwent the test Friday in New York and was examined by team physician Dr. Russell Warren and Dr. Frank Camissa, chief of the spinal surgical services at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The 31-year-old Pierce originally sustained a burner when the Giants played Arizona on Oct. 25. He had very little discomfort until practice this week, when the club’s medical staff scheduled the MRI.

The Giants (5-4) host the Atlanta Flacons on Sunday. New York, coming off its bye week, has lost four straight games.
