Redskins trade for Taylor, lose Daniels

The Washington Redskins traded for Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor on Sunday night, just hours after losing starting left end Phillip Daniels and reserve end Alex Buzbee to season-ending injuries on the first day of training camp.

Quite a first day for rookie Redskins coach Jim Zorn, who was a Seahawks quarterback from 1976 to 1984 and an assistant coach with Seattle (1997-98 and 2001-07).

“It’s hard to predict,” Zorn said of the injuries. “We’ll have to deal with it. There’s just nothing we could discuss to say, ‘What if we’d done this (in practice) or done that?’ ”

Vinny Cerrato, Washington’s executive vice president of football operations, dealt a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010 to acquire Taylor, a perennial Pro Bowler and 2006 defensive player of the year who was engaged in a public spat with the Dolphins after skipping offseason workouts to participate on TV’s “Dancing With the Stars.”

Cerrato said Taylor will move to the left side with Washington – he played right end in Miami – and Andre Carter will remain the starting right end.

Taylor is expected to report to Washington today.

“I love Miami (and) will always cherish my 11 years with the Dolphins,” Taylor said in a statement. “Having said that, I’m looking forward to meeting with Mr. Snyder and getting to know my new coaches and teammates. I’m just proud to be representing our nation’s capital as a Redskin.”

The loss of Daniels, in his 13th NFL season and starting his fifth with Washington, sent an emotional ripple through the locker room. Daniels, 35, is a key leader and had worked hard, with among other things a rigorous power-lifting regimen, this offseason to try to stave off nagging injuries.

Daniels, who began his career with the Seahawks (1996-99), tore his left anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo career-threatening surgery Friday.

Buzbee, a Georgetown product who showed promise on the practice squad last season, ruptured his right Achilles’ while backpedaling during drills early in the afternoon.

Extra points

Defensive end Chris Long, the No. 2 overall pick out of Virginia, agreed to a multiyear deal with the St. Louis Rams. The Rams project Long, son of Hall of Famer and broadcaster Howie Long, will start at right end. The team did not disclose the terms of the deal. … Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, a second-round pick out of Cal, and the Philadelphia Eagles agreed on a four-year contract. He caught 162 passes for 2,423 yards and 22 TDs in 36 games at Cal.
