Here is the TNT story on how this came about. And below, a few notes from the club:
The Tacoma Stars jump into professional indoor soccer tonight against perennial powers San Diego Sockers. It's a quick ascent for the Stars, who have played 8 matches since re-forming late last year.
Tacoma is 5-0-0 in the Western Indoor Soccer League (WISL) and 8-0-0 in all matches, including a 7-4 win over Seattle Impact FC back on October 25. That's the same Impact FC that Stars owner Lane Smith has purchased to gain entry into the MASL.
Never miss a local story.
Dominant SockersThe last time the Tacoma Stars played the San Diego Sockers in a league match was back in 2013. The Stars finished that year in the Professional Arena Soccer League with a winning record, but were blasted twice by the Sockers, 15-5 at the Tacoma Soccer Center on 12-1-2012 and 14-4 in San Diego on 12-15-2012.
The Stars have yet to beat the Sockers in any recent era. In 2011-12 the clubs met four times in the PASL. The Sockers swept all four, home and away, 8-3, 13-6, 13-10 and 9-4.
In 2010-11 The Stars and Sockers played three times. San Diego won a close 8-6 battle at home and then later came to Tacoma for a set of two matches in which they beat the Stars 13-4 and 5-0 in a rare indoor shutout (both at the Tacoma Soccer Center.)
Current LeadersThe Stars are currently being led in goals by forward Derek Johnson, who has 13 over allcompetitions. Johnson is a Tacoma native who attended Pacific Lutheran University. Kyle Danielson and Chris Raymond have 5 goals each.
