The biggest weekend of the Stars season is near as the team prepares for Saturday night’s WISL semi-finals clash with Oly Town FC at 7:30 PM at the Tacoma Soccer Center and Sunday afternoon’s MASL home season finale with the Turlock Express at 4:00 PM at the ShoWare Center. Tacoma, who have been perfect through all eight regular season games in the WISL, are just two wins away from claiming the championship! In terms of MASL play, Sunday’s match-up with Turlock will be the last home MASL game for the Stars this season.
The Stars were dominant in the WISL this season to say the least, as the team had a perfect 8-0-0 record and have earned the homefield advantage throughout the WISL playoffs. However, it has been a different story for Tacoma in the MASL. Since joining the league in mid-January, the Stars have put up valiant efforts against the San Diego Sockers and Las Vegas Legends. But they have been unable to win any one of their first four matches in the MASL.
The Stars have played doubleheaders the last three weekends, and it has proven to be no easy task. But even with a WISL championship game berth on the line and the last MASL home match to take place, Tacoma’s mindset is no different than it normally is, according to forward Chris Raymond. “Our mindset is to win every time we put the Stars jersey on,” Raymond said. “Regardless of the league, we really take pride in what we are doing.”
Never miss a local story.
The former University of Puget Sound student is well aware that he and his teammates have been undefeated in the WISL this season, but Raymond knows what the Stars will have to do to win the next two games and achieve the team’s goal of winning the WISL championship. “We need to stay committed to the gameplan Coach Darren has planned for us,” explains Raymond. “If we do that, I like our chances of coming out with a WISL Championship.”
Raymond still believes something significant is at stake for the Stars in the MASL, too. “I think we have started to build a real foundation for future success in the pro league.” The Stars forward certainly wants to win in the MASL at least once before the season ends in a couple of weeks. “No one hates losing more than us. It’s been a valuable learning lesson and we are quick learners!”
