General manager Adrian Hanauer said it now seems that Blaise Nkufo will go into the books this summer as the Sounders' second designated player. The reasons have to do with complicated Major League Soccer rules, which will actually allow the Sounders a little extra salary cap room if Nkufo is a DP, like Freddie Ljungberg, rather than just a relatively high-salary player, like Kasey Keller. And of course all this is only possible because of the new MLS rule giving each club two DP slots.
Since fans are more interested in players than paperwork, it might seem vaguely disappointing that Nkufo will be the second DP, rather than adding Nkufo plus a second DP. However, league rules do allow the Sounders to acquire a third DP slot. But that seems unlikely now -- again for cap reasons -- unless something happens to move some current high salary off the books.
