As we've discussed before on this blog, the sports world seems to be divided into fans who care very much about team uniforms, and those who can't imagine why anyone would care at all.
That's seemed to be the case with the Sounders on Tuesday, as I spoke to a few about the general topic of soccer kits before and after the unveiling of the Sounders' new electric-yellow alternates.
A few of those reactions:
GM ADRIAN HANAUER on the players' reactions:"I think generally they’re happy to have another option. They don’t get too hung up on the kits. But when we heard about it as an opportunity we jumped on it."
SIGI SCHMID on new or alternate kits: "For me, anytime you get a new jersey everybody gets excited. They want to wear it. What’s happened now in the world of soccer is sometimes you see a team in a color and you say, ‘Who’s that?’ A little bit of that is marketing, but players do get excited about something different and wearing a new jersey.
"I’ve always gotten excited about that. In all the years I coached at UCLA where sort of I was the guy buying the stuff I always tried to mix it up and we tried to have three jerseys when we could and make different combinations and different styles, just because they guys would say, ‘Hey, this looks great.’ You look good, feel good, play good."
SCHMID on his favorite world kit:"The German national team when they’re in white, black, white. I like that one. Obviously the all-white of Real Madrid is attractive to people. And then you’ve obviously got the Barcelona (alternate), when they wear that it makes them distinctive. I think it’s great when teams have traditions, whether it’s a color or the hoops or a chest band or weather it’s the stripes down the middle, a la Boca or like Ajax used to have. I think for us the rave green is certainly a color that’s very special and unique to us."
NATE JAQUA on the new Sounders' look: "I heard this one is going to be pretty bright. I liked the Barcelona one that was that bright. I guess I’d throw that one out there as kind of cool."
JAQUA on the first team jersey he ever wore: "I think it was blue and white stripe down. It was too long ago. You’re making me feel far too old."
TAYLOR GRAHAM on his favorite jersey in the world: "Sounders’ jersey for sure -- as long as I’m playing for this team."
GRAHAM on the first jersey he ever wore: "I played for Fair Oaks rec team. It was bright yellow. It was yellow and black. I looked more like a bumble bee. It was more of an ostentatious yellow (than Columbus Crew in MLS). It was bright. You stood out, for sure."
STEVE ZAKUANI on his favorite EPL kit: "I like Arsenal's jersey -- Arsenal's second jersey, the dark blue one. I like that one. If (the Sounders' alternate) wasn't yellow, dark blue would have been good.
