Looking at the current realities of the Western Conference standings, Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said his club's goal for this weekend is to move into second place in the west.
They'll need some help, but they obviously can help their own cause with three points against West-leading and currently unbeaten Los Angeles on Saturday.
"We’d like to be out of second place as we come out of this weekend," Schmid said after training this morning at Qwest Field. "The results last night – with Colorado losing at home, with Houston losing at home playing a man up – it keeps them stuck at 10 points, and I think we’re all even in games now. So what we want to do is we want to get into second place.
"The top two teams in the division get an automatic berth in the playoffs. Second place – if not first – means you still have home field in the first round of the playoffs. We’ll worry about trying to climb to first place much later. Right now our goal is to get ourselves into second place to start separating ourselves from the pack. So from that standpoint, the game’s important."
