Here are the highlights:
On the injury: "It’s a big loss. Jhon Kennedy has been a solid defender for us, obviously, for a year and a half now, and a great individual on the team. So, we’re definitely shattered to lose Jhon’s presence on the team, his one-on-one defense, his quality. But we’re deep at center back. Obviously having signed Jeff Parke now will provide some additional cover and quality there. And we’ll move on. There are injuries in soccer and sports, so we can’t hang our heads and worry about it now. Now we have to go forward and make the best of a bad situation."
On the roster implications: "He’ll just go on the (injured reserve), which in our league just to be clear, provides a roster slot but no cap space. So it’s not like we get to replace that salary with a new player. Ao that leads to the next question, which is probably, 'How does this affect how you look at the roster and the moves you might make?' And the answer to that is we’ve been continuously looking to improve the roster from the beginning of the season. We’ll continue down that path. This doesn’t really affect the way we’re looking at improving the roster, because again it doesn’t provide us with any cap space."
Meanwhile, here is the release from the club:
Never miss a local story.
The Seattle Sounders FC announced today that central defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado has been placed on injured reserve due to a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Hurtado suffered the injury in stoppage time near midfield while closing down Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski, who was aiming for a try at Seattle's open net. Behind 1-0, goalkeeper Kasey Keller had come forward on a 93rd minute corner kick. Hurtado is required to miss the next six games of the season. He is eligible to return to league play for the July 15 game at D.C. United. Hurtado, 26, has started and played the full 90 minutes in all nine appearances this season; his second in MLS. He did not play at Toronto FC. Last season for Seattle, Hurtado started and played the full 90 minutes in 28 of 29 appearances with one goal and one assist. He was named an MLS All-Star and was a finalist for Defender of the Year.
