Speaking of bright yellow kits ... Friday night's home opener will arrive just in time for Tacoma Tide FC, which owner Mike Jennings believes is a solid club despite its 0-2 start in this Premier Development League season.
The Tide opens its home season with a two-game homestand: a 7:30 game Friday against the Yakima Reds and a 3 p.m. Sunday match with the Spokane Spiders. All home games will be played at Curtis High School in University Place.
The club is working under a new coach: Gerry Gray, an inductee to the Canadian soccer hall of fame and a former member of the Tacoma Stars.
“I think you’ll see probably a little more working class, blue-collar style than what you saw last year,” Jennings said. “We have probably all in all a better talent pool than last year, even through we’ve got a bit of a slow start. … We’re looking forward to being at home, that’s for sure.”
The Tide opened the season with a pair of road losses: 3-0 at Kitsap and 1-0 at Portland.
“It’s just a tough start to get things going, but I feel real good about this side,” Jennings said. “It’s a really solid group of some younger college guys and some veteran players.”
Among them are forward/midfielder Raphael Cox, who was drafted by Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer last season; Spencer Schomaker, who played at Syracuse; and Mark Conrad, who played at the University of Puget Sound.
