It's gone final. Seattle advances, 4-3 on PKs. Zach Scott got the winner.
The Sounders advance to the Open Cup quarterfinals, hosting LA on Wednesday at Starfire.
I'll be back.
Headed for PKs: It's still 1-1 after 120 minutes. So we're headed to penalty kicks... which just happened to be the topic of our preview story in today's paper.
Portland will shoot first.
101st minute: The Sounders will play the final 19 minutes shorthanded as Taylor Graham has just been sent off for picking up his second yellow card. However, the Sounders might just gulp and be grateful, as the foul was very very close to the penalty box.
Full time: Still 1-1. Seattle dominated the final minutes, but didn't really have any particularly solid chance. Portland did, on a counter, which ended when Taylor Graham put a brave tackle on Bright Dike in the box.
Now we're headed for 30 minutes more. And then, if needed, PKs.
75th minute: Still 1-1. A reminder that if it stays even through 90, there will be 30 minutes of added time. And if even still, then we go to PKs. In other words, same as the World Cup knockout rounds.
70th minute: Zakuani in for Montano.
65th minute: The Sounders' first substitution: Fredy Montero for Nate Jaqua.
Attendance: 15,422, a sellout and the Timbers' largest crowd of the season.
Second half: We're under way again.
Halftime: They leave the pitch even at 1.
Portland has taken the most shots, 8-6. Keller has made three saves, Steve Cronin one.
38th minute: The Sounders (Wahl? Scott? Anyone know? We don't have replay in this press box) lost the ball in the penalty area, and Portland made him pay as Ryan Pore passed to Bright Dike (pronounced D-K) who slid it past the diving, stretching Kasey Keller. 1-1.
13th minute: This odd lineup is working fine so far. First-time starter Michael Seamon passed down the far side to first-time starter Miguel Montano. Montano crossed to Sanna Nyassi in the box on the far side. He headed it on to Nate Jaqua, who headed it into the back of the net.
Kickoff: The game has begun.
Lineup: Open Cup lineups can be interesting, and tonight's is no exception: GK Keller, D Wahl, Riley, Scott, Graham; M Sturgis, Seamon, Nyassi, Montano; F Jaqua, Levesque. Bench: Ianni, Zakuani, Estrada, Montero, Noonan, Boss, Parke.
Who are those guys?: Both teams are out on the pitch warming up, although it's hard to identify either. The Sounders are in their electricity yellow kits, while the Timbers are in red shirts and dark green shorts ... for warmups at least.
If the Sounders win: They will host the Los Angeles Galaxy one week from tonight at Starfire. LA advanced with a 2-0 win over second-division AC St. Louis.
PGE for MLS: There has been some early work done to make PGE Park MLS ready by next spring. The major work, however, will start after the Portland Beavers' baseball season when the soccer field will be shifted closer to what is the bottom of this picture, and sideline stands will be installed along the open (outfield) stretch between the current pitch and the wall/scoreboard.
FieldTurf also will be installed -- I assume due to Northwest weather and because PGE will remain the home of Portland State football.
Pregame: It's a near-perfect day in Portland, as the Sounders and Timbers prepare for their U.S. Open Cup match at 7:30 and on FSN.
There's a nice little buzz in the area around the stadium. Lots of folks wearing either Timbers green or Sounders green (although the Sounders themselves will wear yellow tonight). At the souvenir stands around the park, I'm seeing far more items with the MLS Timbers logo than their current on.
Also, you may recall that the Timbers Army did an elaborate display in the end zone last season, where they appeared to chop down the Space Needle. I hear they have something "even better" planned for tonight.
I'll be back with lineups and any other pregame news. Then we'll keep this post open for in-game and postgame updates and, of course, your comments.
