Here's what Schmid had to say today after Sounders training at Starfire Sports Complex:
“What we talked about when I talked to Blaise is basically from when his World Cup ended, we were going to try to give him two weeks, at least. So we’re talking right now how that works, because it actually ends up working where we’re about gone for D.C. You really want to get him into training: You don’t want his first exposure to the team to be 'OK, let’s stick you out in a game.'
"For us it’s important that he gets a break now. The thing that you don’t want to do for a player playing as long as he has – where he had a long season and then World Cup preparation and then World Cup – if you rush him back then you have to find little mini-breaks along the way. So, we’d rather do one big break now, and when he’s in he’s in, rather than taking mini-breaks. We’re roughly looking at two weeks, and we’re trying to finalize that. Hopeful,ly over the next day or two we’ll be able to say 'This is the day he’ll be back.'"
If Nkufo doesn't play at D.C., then he would likely make his first appearance in a home game: either the July 18 friendly vs. Celtic or the July 25 league game vs. Colorado.
