We had a note the other day that the Portland Timbers selected Houston assistant John Spencer as their first MLS coach.
Sounders defender Patrick Ianni got to know Spencer in his three seasons with the Dynamo, and he said after training today that he thinks the Timbers made a great hire.
"John is a tremendous guy," Ianni said. "I had the great privilege of training with him and having him as my assistant coach in Houston. We were very fortunate to get him there and I’m surprised it’s taken him this long to get a head coaching job. He’ll be a very good head coach, I think, creating a very committed team. He’s very committed to his players, he cares greatly about them. Guys will find a lot of freedom, I think, playing under him. He’s a bit like (Philadelphia coach Peter) Nowak in his intensity. He really cares about his players."
Meanwhile, here's a link to video coverage of Spencer's first press conference in Portland.
