The Sounders' 3-1 win tonight over Chivas USA punched their ticket to the U.S. Open Cup final, where they will try to become the first MLS club to repeat as champion.
The game will be played Oct. 5 at Qwest Field, and the opponent will be Sigi Schid's former club: the Columbus Crew, who advanced with a 2-1 come-from-behind extra-time win tonight at D.C. United.
Some Sounders reaction:
GENERAL MANAGER ADRIAN HANAUER:"I’m very excited for our fans, for our team, the organization – everybody who works so hard. It is rare that you get to play for a championship at home and we’re certainly going to give it every ounce of effort to get the result, and hopefully we can collect a trophy at home."
Never miss a local story.
On two finals in two seasons: "As I was watching the game, we go up 3-1, I was thinking of how much I appreciate every player, coach, individual in the organization busting their butts to get here. This is a great team, great locker room, great attitude. It’s a lot of games. They’re working hard, they’re earning their money, so I’m just so appreciative of that effort."
COACH SIGI SCHMID"Obvously, we’re excited about playing for the title. It’s kind of ironic, it’s the team I’m coaching now against the team I used to coach. Obviously I know their whole coaching staff, I know a lot of the players there, so it’s going to be emotional that way. But we’re hosting the game, and we’re very excited. We want to sell out Qwest and we want to be able to hoist the trophy in front of all of those people."
STEVE ZAKUANI"Now we can look forward to the final at Qwest Field. I think that was kind of the carrot at the end of the stick. So, we went out there, got the early goal. We got the second one. They came back, but we managed to close it off. So now is a good time to win."
FREDY MONTERO, via translator"We're very happy. We came as a host and played as a champion and the title we won last year will help us to play in this final. Now it's a matter of playing in this final."
NATE JAQUA"A chance to play a final at Qwest stadium in front of our fans is an unbelievable opportunity. A great, hard-fought win by the guys. It was fun."
On a second cup final in two years:"It's great. Even better, it will be unbelievable to play at Qwest and a chance to lift the trophy there. Anytime you get to a final it's great and the Open Cup is a good one."
