However, they also expressed relief and pride at the club's first win in CONCACAF group-stage play.
Coach SIGI SCHMIDOn the game: “I thought Marathon came in very defensively in their early posture. They played basically like a 5-3-2 and split their forwards wide, so it was almost like a 5-4-1 at times. So it required us to be a little bit patient. It was good for us to get the first goal because that forced them to open up a little bit.”
On being 1-4 in the competiton: "We're still disappointed with our overall Champions League performance. There were four MLS teams in the competition. The two that had two out of their first three games away are out of it. If we would have had this game at home the first time around, maybe there's a little more confidence that ends up happening. The evenness of the schedule seems feasible to do. Seems that after two games you would have one home and one away and after four games you would have two home and two away. For a young team like ours, in this competition, that's really important."
Never miss a local story.
On Fucito's ankle sprain: “He fights and he battles. And in fact he got injured probably going into a tackle he didn’t need to go into.”
On the crowd of 11,768 – the smallest ever to watch Sounders FC at Qwest Field: “That’s still bigger than a lot of crowds that come to Champions League. … There are a lot of teams that would be happy to play this competition in front of 10,000. So we’re happy about that. I took the glass as half full, not half empty.”
TYSON WAHLOn getting that first international victory: "It's a relief to finally get our first win in the Champions League. I think we've been a little unlucky and been in some games that we should've won -- we kind of had a couple lapses, a couple 10-15 lapses where we weren't playing well and let games slip. It was definitely a relief to finally one of the Champions League games. It's exciting."
PETER VAGENASOn returning to action: "I felt great. It's obviously been a personal struggle for me but to get there... obviously I've been training now for about 7-8 days. It felt great."
