I guess at least in some sense, the 2011 MLS season gets under way today. Here's an update from the league.
The 18 Major League Soccer clubs are permitted to begin preseason training today, about two months prior to First Kick 2011 presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Please visit the individual club websites and www.MLSsoccer.com for preseason training updates and travel plans. Among the highlights of the MLS preseason is the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic tournament, Feb. 24 and 26 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. Three MLS clubs – FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, and Toronto FC – will participate in the tournament along with Orlando City Soccer Club (USL Pro). Another preseason tournament is the annual Carolina Challenge Cup at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C., where Chicago Fire, D.C. United and Toronto FC will compete along with the host Charleston Battery. Doubleheaders on March 5, 9, and 12 will determine the winner in a round-robin format. MLS will kick off its 16th season on Tuesday, March 15, when Seattle Sounders FC host the LA Galaxy live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN3.com at 6:30 p.m. PT. MLS First Kick 2011 is presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods. The complete 2011 regular season, with national television broadcasts, will be announced in the first week of February.
The Sounders, meanwhile, will get going Tuesday.
