The Sounders trained on a temporary natural grass field installed at CenturyLink Field for the Manchester United friendly next week. However, the pitch is down early enough for the Sounders to use it also for their league match against Colorado here Saturday.
We asked general manager Adrian Hanauer about it today.
"For these massive games we pull out all the stops and brought the sod in 10-days/two weeks ago," he said. "And it’s playing nicely. It’s great. We’ve had time to let it rest, to let it start growing. I think both teams will be happy with it on the 20th. And certainly we have a big game coming up on it with Colorado as well.
"(The players) are buzzing around. It actually played pretty much like the Starfire training pitch. It’s not like they’re not on it a lot of times. But it’s fun to come in here, smell the grass, and get to run around on it."
We also got this reaction from goalkeeper Kasey Keller:
"The grass looks good. I think of all the games that we’ve put grass on here, this is probably the best it’s looked. I don’t know if it’s because they’ve had some time to lay it earlier and the weather’s cooperated a bit, but it feels pretty good today. The ball bounces a little bit, it’s skipping, so hopefully it’ll be solid for the next couple of games."
