There are 16 teams competing in CONCACAF Champions League and only one has a perfect record at the midpoint of group play.
That team is Sounders FC, which tonight beat Herediano of Costa Rica 2-1, moving to 3-0 after its first meetings against the other three teams in Group D. Two of those wins came on the road.
Fredy Montero scored both of Seattle’s goals against Herediano.
The first came in the third minute, when Nate Jaqua slipped a pass into the penalty area, where Montero sent back across and inside the far post.
Never miss a local story.
Herediano equalized just before halftime when Roger Levesque was whistled for a push in the area. Former MLS player Jose Cancela sent the penalty kick past Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
Montero’s game-winner came in the 54th minute when Jaqua sent a pass to Levesque down the left side of the penalty area. Levesque knocked the ball toward the far post, where Montero nudged it across the goal line.
The result gives Seattle nine points, which sometimes is enough to advance.
Meanwhile, Comunicaciones (2-1) moved to second in the group with a 1-0 home win over defending champion Monterrey (1-2).
Herediano fell to 0-3, and has been outscored 9-1 in group play.
The Costa Rican side will make its return trip to Seattle at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
But first, the Sounders return to MLS play at 6 p.m. Saturday against D.C. United at CenturyLink Field.
