The news that the Tacoma Tide have become the Sounders FC U-23 team in the PDL was enthusiastically supported today by Sounders coach Sigi Schmid:
"I think that’s great. It’s important for the academy kids to be able to come back here in the summers and play and continue to grow and develop. And when you look at a lot of the academy kids that went off last year and had good seasons – like (Troy) Peterson at the College of Charleston, Sean Okoli at Wake Forest, DeAndre (Yedlin) at Akron – so now these guys have a place to come back to. I think it also gives us a chance to bring in some players: college players I think would like to come into the Seattle to play some of their summer soccer. It becomes a logical progress. It bridges that gap from the under-18 academy team to the pro team and becomes a great enhancement for the development of players in addition to their college experience."
