This Friday training update in from the club:
Seattle Sounders FC returned to two-a-day training sessions on Friday after a single session on Thursday. The morning session began with ball work and passing drills followed by several small field games. Head coach Sigi Schmid set up four playing fields, two that had four small goals and two with regular goals on either end, and split the group into eight teams of four. The pace was rapid as two teams would play each other on each field and then rotate every two minutes with just a short break in between games. Goals also came at a rapid pace as both David Estrada and Lamar Neagle scored multiple times, along with several other players. Following the 4 v 4 games, the players were grouped into four teams of nine for 9 v 9 scrimmages on a narrow field. Among the goal scorers in the 9 v 9 scrimmages were Fredy Montero and Osvaldo Alonso.
The afternoon session began with footwork drills led by fitness coach Dave Tenney. The team then split into three groups of nine players for a pass and move game on a small field. Each group of nine players split into three teams where two of teams were in possession as the other team defended, creating a 6 v 3 situation. The teams would switch every turnover and there was a one or two touch restriction. The afternoon session ended with nearly 45 minutes of finishing drills. One end of the field featured a crossing and finishing drill while on the other end a player at midfield would play a long ball to the goal box where the attacker would try to finish 1 v 1. The third field featured a 4 v 4 game with one neutral player and two small goals on either end.
Sounders FC will train at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and hold an afternoon weight session before the team gets Saturday night and Super Bowl Sunday off.
Never miss a local story.
