The opening goal was a combination of old and new, as Fredy Montero, an original Sounder, headed in a cross from Adam Johansson, who was signed during the off-season.
The capper came from a combination of veterans, as Osvaldo Alonso sent a pass to Montero, who lofted a shot in from just outside the top of the penalty area.
That was enough to give Seattle its second win over a Mexican Primera League club in as many weeks, following a 5-2 win at Atlante. However, the next one counts, as the Sounders play their first meaningful match of the 2012 season next Wednesday: a CONCACAF Championships league home quarterfinal opener against Santos Laguna.
Never miss a local story.
Sounders coach Sigi Schmid had said he would use the final friendly of the preseason to prepare his starters for that Santo match. The lineup he sent out used goalkeeper Michael Gspurning; defenders Johansson, Jeff Parke, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Leo Gonzalez; midfielders Mauro Rosales, Alonso, Brad Evans and Alvaro Fernandez; and forwards David Estrada and Montero. Schmid added that newly acquired forward Eddie Johnson will move into the lineup once recovered from a hamstring injury.
Seattle concluded the preseason 5-0-2.
I'll be back with notes, quotes and comments.74th minute: Montero's second goal -- a sweet little chip from 19 yards -- makes it 2-0. Assist to Alonso.
61st minute: GOAL Sounders. Montero header from about 7 yards, finishing cross from Johansson. Parke also gets assist. Sounders, 1-0.
Attendance: Announced at 11,140. Sounders announce they have raised over $34,000 for their charity partners. Congratulations and thanks for all those who contributed.
Second half: Has begun. No substitutions for either club.
Halftime: Scoreless. Only a few good chances, but probably more for the Sounders. Best probably came in the 37th minute when Mauro Rosales carried into the area, drew the keeper out to the right and then rolled a pass back to Montero in front of the goal. Jaguares defenders got back to clog the space and blocked the shot.
Gspurning hasn't been tested enough to form an impression yet.
Kickoff: We're under way. Sounders in rave/blue ... not super cyan. Jaguares in orange/black.
Not sure how to estimate crowd, but compared to what I remember when the USL Sounders used to play here, I'm thinking 8,000 or so. Maybe more. And good enthusiasm from the South End, as always.
Pregame: Sounders have just announced their starting lineup: Sounders starters: Gspurning, Johansson, Parke, Hurtado, Gonzalez, Rosales, Alonso, Evans, Fernandez, Estrada and Montero.
Rosales has been designated as captain.
Reserves are Ianni, Burch, Tetteh, Sodade, Scott, Seamon, Carrasco, Levesque, Ochoa, Sivebaek, Weber, Meredith, Rose, Caskay, Duran.
We could also have some very flexible substitution rules tonight, but we haven't been told.
About a half hour to first kick, and the east side lower bowl is filling in well. Supporters groups retain their normal sound end spots.
