Sounders trained at CenturyLink today. Here's some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say:
On Eddie Johnson’s progress) “We wanted him to go and practice today, so we’ll see how it feels tomorrow. So that’s the key, how he does after having gone today? But we wanted him full-in so he’s still building his fitness, as well. Whether he’ll start on Wednesday or not, even if his hamstring is healthy, is still 50/50. Certainly today he got through everything. He said he felt fine, so we’ll see how he feels tomorrow morning.”
On Santos Laguna's 5-2 win yesterday) “Yeah. I’ve watched a few of their games. Obviously, [Oribe] Peralta scored some fine goals in that game, especially the second one [...] He’s an excellent forward, they’re a good team. They ended up being able to play a man up, which made the game a little bit easier for them, as well. They played a team they should beat and they got a good result, and scored some goals.”
On characterizing Santos Laguna’s team) “Obviously they’re a team that likes to attack and they have good attacking properties. Peralta is a good player. Obviously, [Carlos] Quintero, when he’s out there, is a good player. [Christian] Suarez does good stuff. [Daniel] Ludueña coming out of midfield is a typical Argentinean playmaker. Their midfielders--their central guys are good with the ball. JP Rodriguez, he’s played 40-plus times for Mexico, is a clever and experienced player. [Marc] Corsas played yesterday. They’re a team that does well with the ball, that holds on to the ball well. When you look at their team and really break it down there’s a couple of new pieces, but there’s a lot of guys that have been there since about 2005, 2006 or ‘07. So it’s a nucleus of seven-eight guys that have been together now for four or five years.”
Never miss a local story.
On how the team is doing physically) “We’re doing OK. Roger Levesque is getting over a little bit of a knock, so we held him out a little bit today. Eddie’s dealing with his hamstring, he’s getting better. Outside of that, we’re OK, except obviously Josh Ford.”
On the mood of the team today with just days until Santos) “It’s good. I think the guys had fun. We did some two-v-two’s, we did some three-v-three’s, stuff like that, which are exercises that you can’t hide in. There’s no hiding in those types of drills, but I thought the guys enjoyed it. There were some good goals scored. There was some good creativity, as well.”
