Fans got to watch about the last half hour of Sounders training this morning before the club's annual preseason luncheon.
That also was the first topic coach Sigi Schmid addressed in his post-practice news conference:
“Our fans have been the backbone of this organization for a long time," he said. " Without them, none of this would be possible. We’re very appreciative of the fans. It’s great to be able to have them attend a large part of training, and having the Kickoff Luncheon here is fantastic.”
Other topics:On the shortened training today) “Guys are always happy when they know that. It’s re-gen day for the guys who played on Wednesday, and the other guys have a game tomorrow against Oregon State, so it gives them a chance to have an easier training day. We just had some fun, made sure that we’re sharp coming off a day off, and getting ready for the game tomorrow.”
Never miss a local story.
On if Eddie Johnson will start on Wednesday) “That’s something we’ll decide as the week goes on. Like I said, there’s always a lot of things that go into that. We’re also still building Eddie’s fitness, so tomorrow he’ll play some of the game, then we’ll do some extra work with him after that. It’s a constant evaluation as to where we think we’re at with that.”
On David Estrada’s play) “Obviously, David played well, getting a goal. The thing about David is his fitness level is so good, we know he’s the kind of guy who can go 90 minutes. We took him off at the end more to kill a little bit of time than anything else. He’s a player that can play 90.”
On the win against Santos Laguna) “I thought it was good. Watching the tape, I thought we did well. I thought we did well in the second half, too. I thought we had some good periods of possession where we knocked the ball around. I thought at times our defensive shape was good, as well—it’s something that can get a little bit better. I thought we just missed connecting on a couple combinations and passes, so that was good.”
On if he thinks they need to score a goal on Wednesday against Santos Laguna) “All I know is they have to beat us, and I know that in our last thee games in qualifying, we didn’t lose on the road. We went down to Guatemala, we went down to Costa Rica, and we went down to Mexico. So if we can achieve the same thing, we’ll be in good shape. Do I think we are capable of scoring a goal? Yes, I think we’re very capable of scoring a goal.”
