Sounders forward David Estrada was selected today MLS player of the week, following his hat trick in Seattle’s 3-1 win over Toronto on Saturday.
The award is voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters. My first vote went to Estrada, with my second-place vote going to goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen of Kansas City.
Estrada said that he received a lot of congratulatory text messages and emails after his breakthrough – which represented the first, second and third goals of his professional career. And he said his Twitter account grew by about 500 followers.
Naturally, he was the main interview target for media covering the game Saturday and again at training yesterday, where he also posed for pictures with young fans at Starfire Sports Complex.
He seems to be such a genuinely team-oriented and humble guy that I asked him if he is prepared for some of the spotlight that comes with starting and perhaps even starring.
“In my mind that’s not what I work for,” he said. “I work to improve every day. My mentality was to get minutes like I said early on in preseason, and thankfully things have been working out. I’m more than happy to come off the bench, as I said before, and I just want to do what I can for this team, and I’m just happy for this opportunity.”
