Here's some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say after Sounders training today at Starfire:
His impressions on the D.C. draw, two days later...) "My feeling after the game was that we did a good job defending-wise. [There were] three chances where we really exposed ourselves-the one where [Chris] Pontius dribbled through, [Hamdi] Salihi's off the post, and [Nick] DeLeon the one time. Outside of that, I thought we were pretty solid. I thought we created chances not enough, but there were certain times I felt as a team our decision-making needs to be a little quicker with the ball offensively. That'll help get us off the mark offensively. There's been times where a half-a-second or a second delay on a decision, or a delay on a pass, or an extra pass here or there, sometimes it just allows the opponent to recover. They did a good job defensively. They were committed to recovering, so I think that kept us from getting the goal that we needed. We've got to sharpen that up this week, for sure."
On the injury status of Mauro Rosales and Adam Johansson) "Hard to say. We'll see how it is. We wanted to see where they were at and evaluate today. Tomorrow, neither of them will play in the reserve game, but they'll train with us. So tomorrow will really be the evaluation point as to whether we think they can play."
On how close Eddie Johnson is to 100-percent) "100-percent physically? I think he's there. It's a matter of fitness-wise-building the minutes and also players' confidence in his touch. People have to remember that when you add up all the competitive minutes played, it hasn't been a lot, so he needs to get those minutes. He will be somebody who will play tomorrow night because we need to continue to build his fitness and we need to continue to build his competitive minutes."
Never miss a local story.
On David Estrada the last two games) "I thought the D.C. game for him was better than the game against San Jose. I thought he did a good job of holding up the ball for us. I thought the ball he laid through to [Alvaro] Fernandez was a good chance for us in the first half. The run he made where [Fernandez] tried to get the ball back to him in the second half could have been a goal for him if he gets a good pass. I thought he put himself in good position to make good runs in this last game."
On the play of the defense) "Obviously, defensively last year, we gave up a few more goals than I think we had done the year before, or around the same. You always want to get your goals against to be under one a game. We're obviously at that point. We're not happy about being shut out the last couple games, so now it's important for us to make sure we eliminate that bugaboo and maintain what we're doing defensively. I think our commitment to defending, certainly, has been pretty good. We've gotten some help from the wide guys, as well. I think we've done a good job on what we needed to do tactically in certain games. Like in the last game I thought Ozzie [Alonso] did a good job on Dwayne De Rosario. So that's helped us defend and get the results we needed."
