Monterrey defended its CONCACAF Champions League title tonight, defeating Santos Laguna, 3-2 on aggregate. (Game report here.)
The final match was a thriller, as Santos scored the first two goals, making up Monterrey's advantage from the opener. However, Monterrey's Neri Cardozo answered with eight minutes left in regulation, clinching the title.
Sounders FC had begun the tournament in Monterrey's group, and finished second behind the eventual champion, 12 points to 10. In head-to-head competition, the Sounders won at Monterrey 1-0 and lost 2-1 in Seattle.
The Sounders also split with Santos, losing a quarterfinal series on aggregate, taking a 2-1 decision at home before losing 6-1 in Mexico.More at the CCL website.
