Vancouver took its second the lead over the Sounders in the 82nd minute, when Camilo Sanvezzo sent a free kick in front of the goal mouth, ahead of a scrum of Whitecap attackers and Sounder defenders.
Seattle keeper Bryan Meredith watched for the redirection that never came, and the ball bounced untouched into the net. (Camilo was initially credited with an assist, but replays determined no one touched the ball but him.)
“I had to stay and just follow the ball along just in case of a deflection, them or us,” Meredith said. “Unfortunately we just weren’t able to clear the ball and it snuck in the back of the net. … It’s tough. You’ve just got to try to take a quick peek once in a while and just follow along. A lot of it has to do with feel, feeling like where the bodies are around you as well.”
Seattle salvaged the draw in the final minute of regulation on a goal by Fredy Montero.
