On missing regulars on the back line) "It could be three out of the back four changes because [Adam] Johansson is with Sweden and you've got Leo [Gonzalez] out, as well, with a hamstring. It's a chance for [Pat] Ianni and for [Marc] Burch and for Zach [Scott] to step up, which they have done at numerous times this season, and it's their opportunity." (Also unlikely is defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, facial fracture.)
On their familiarity with RSL because of their roster consistency) "I think everybody in the league is familiar with them. You look at them and you compare them to the team that won (MLS Cup) for them in 2009, and I think there's really, without [Andy] Williams and without Robbie Russell, the rest of the team is pretty much the same. It's a lot of similar guys out there. They're a team that's been able to stay intact. Their nucleus, their top 10-11 players have been there now for four years together. There's certainly a familiarity they have with each other as a group, a familiarity that shows in their play, as well. Every team in the league has a good awareness of what they're about when they've got their people on the field."
On being shutout by RSL in both games so far) "We were unlucky, I thought, in the first game not to get a goal against them. Defensively, for us, we haven't always played with our full firepower against them...It's something we've got to get our offense on track on the flanks and get behind them. If we can do that then we can have more success. We didn't do that as well bits and pieces of those two games."
On RSL offensively) "We've had some time to work with [our defense] this week. We've played a little bit of 11-v-11 so they've got some time to be able to work together. Without Saborio, it sort of changes how they are because their classic big man forward matched with an active forward-[Fabian] Espindola sometimes plays more like a winger than he plays like a forward, and he knows he always has Saborio in the middle there that he can get the ball to. Without Saborio there, it changes a little bit their dynamic. Again, they're a team-[Javier] Morales, Espindola, Saborio, Beckerman, Will Johnson, Ned Grabavoy-those guys have had a lot of minutes together."
Never miss a local story.
On Eddie Johnson's two goals for the US National Team on Friday) "It was great. It was great for Eddie, it was great for the club, and it was great for the US because it was an important three points down there on a day where it was difficult day to play soccer because of the weather and the field conditions. Eddie, to come through and score on those two headers and get the last-minute one was something that speaks well for the kind of year he's had."
