(In MLS, Martinez has no starts and three appearances for a total of 40 mintes. In CONCACAF, he has two starts for a total of 151 minutes.)
In a meeting with the media today, Martinez apologized for that and stuck a team-first attitude.
Speaking through a translator, Martinez said:
"I want you all to understand that I’m really happy with the team. Unfortunately, there are a lot of good players, and I have to wait my opportunity. Sometimes when you come from another country, you try to help the team, and that’ what I’m awaiting. What I said already happened, so now we need to concentrate on the game on Wednesday."On if the club promised more minutes of a starting role before he signed: "I signed with the hope and expectations to play. But like I said, it’s a new team, a new league, a new atmosphere, and when you’re new you have to wait for your opportunity and take advantage when it gets there."
Never miss a local story.
On if his time away with the Honduras national team has slowed his progress with the Sounders: "Perhaps I have not spent enough time here with the team, (while away) with the national team." (Note: at this point, the translator switches to the second person:) He doesn’t know if that upset the coaches. If that is the case he asks for forgiveness, but he wants everyone to understand that he wants to help the team and support the team.
Asked about Martinez's playing status and tweet, coach Sigi Schmid said, "We'll sort that out. Me and Mario are going to talk."
