Sounders U-23 standout Fernando Monge was a standout midfielder in a roster with multiple MLS talents. Monge’s season was highlighted by an 88th minute, game-winner, on the road against Cascadia rival; Portland Timbers U-23. Fernando Monge subsequently received PDL Team of the Week honors for Week 8. Fernando played 15 games and logged over 1200 minutes in addition to his five goals and two assists for the season.
“Fernando had a great year with the Sounders U-23 this past summer and a great year this fall at UCLA,” said Darren Sawatzky, Sounders U-23 Head Coach. “We are excited that he is continuing his career in MLS.”
Amid his career with the Sounders U-23’s, Monge played collegiately with UCLA. While at UCLA, his accomplishments included a run to the NCAA Final Four, and this season; Monge was selected NSCAA Second-team All-Far West, and First-team All-Pac-12. This season he spent time as a midfielder and forward, starting all 19 games and scoring five goals and one assist. Adding to his long list of accolades, Fernando was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for Oct. 28-Nov. 5 after scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime vs. Stanford.
Fernando Monge joins the Montreal Impact’s 8th overall selection, Blake Smith, as 1st round selections by the 2nd year organization.
