It's gone final. Sounders win 1-0, and have just lifted the Desert Diamond Cup in on-field ceremonies.
Here was coach Sigi Schmid's overview take on the close to their Tucson preseason work:
We got 90 minutes out of our starters yesterday, we got 90 minutes out of most of the guys tonight, as well. I thought the guys played great. It shows the depth of our team. We’re playing with three rookies back there in the back four, and I thought the centerbacks played really well – a big improvement over the last game. But I thought they were solid – and they were playing against (Alvaro) Saborio and (Robbie) Findley. There were a few minutes there at the end of the first half where we were scrambling, we were on our heels a bit. But after that we caught ourselves, and I thought we did good.
I'll be back with notes and quotes.
51st minute: GOAL Seattle. Caskey takes ball down the right side, loses defender on a nice cut back and fires left-footed into net. Seattle, 1-0.
Second half: ... has begun. No changes for Sounders.
Halftime: Nil-nil. Sounders had better chances early. RSL came on late, but couldn't get anything past Marcus Hahnemann, who had a spectacular half.
First 10 minutes: Best chances to Sounders. Neagle hit one on goal that Rimando knocked away. Then Ochoa put a shot off the crossbar.
First kick: ... has been struck. We're under way. RSL in red/red. Sounders in rave/rave.
Lineups: Sounders going with G Hahnemann; M Remick, Zavaleta, Fairclough, Burch; M Burch, Caskey, Rose, Neagle; F Ochoa, Estrada. Reserves: Ford, Yedlin, Durr, Okai, Lund, Bowen, Rex, Sodade.
RSL going with Rimando, Mansally, Schuler, Watson-Siriboe, Beltran, Grabavoy, Beckerman, Velasquez, Stephenson, Findley, Saborio.
The basics: The game will be shown on NBCSN. It will not be streamed. I'll have updates here and @donruiztnt.
If the final is even after 90 minutes, the game will go straight to penalty kicks. Then the winner will receive its cup in an on-pitch ceremony.Consolation game: New England takes Desert Diamond Cup consolation, 2-0 over New York.
