Sounders FC had plenty of chances, but the Montreal Impact scored the only goal tonight at CenturyLink Field in the MLS opener for both clubs. A crowd of 38,998 attended.
The Sounders had the most chances in their 1-0 loss, with forward Eddie Johnson seeming especially dangerous with several good chances including one a potential equalizer from close range that banged off the crossbar.
However, the only goal came in the35th minute when Monteal’s Davy Arnaud got behind the Seattle defense at the penalty arc. Goalkeeper Michael Gspurning charged off his line, and Arnaud chipped the ball over the keeper and under the crossbar.
The Sounders were playing without several potential starters, as Osvaldo Alonso and Marc Burch were unavailable due to disciplinary suspension, Adam Johansson and Patrick Ianni were out due to injury, and newly acquired Shalrie Joseph wasn’t yet fit for the 18-man roster.
Nineteen-year-old rookie DeAndre Yedlin made his professional debut, starting in place of Johansson.
The Sounders move next into the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series, which starts Wednesday at Tigres of Mexico.
Their next MLS game is March 16, when the Portland Timbers visit.
I'll be back with notes and quotes.68th minute:
64-66 minutes: Arnaud shot that hits the crossbar; then Brad Evans shot smacks the post. Montreal still up, 1-0.
Second half: Has begun. Sanna Nyassi in for Montreal.
Halftime: Montreal up, 1-0.
35th minute: GOAL Montreal. Nice little chip from just outside penalty area by Davy Arnaud. Very much against the run of play.
Through 30: Eddie Johnson getting plenty of chances. At least three shots, plus the one he couldn't get off when knocked down. Still scoreless.
First 10 minutes: Sounders dominating early. But scoreless. Best chance to Eddie Johnson.
First kick: ... has been struck. Here we go.
