Below is the news release from the club.
However, I just spoke with Sounders U-23/Women owner Lane Smith and he added a few clarifications.
* The pitch will be full grass and will be angled differently than it was for the couple of games the U-23 played last season, when the infield dirt was left in place and the field ran in a fan-unfieldly angle from first base to center field.
* As implied in the release below, the game also is something of a test for Tacoma's ability to support a USL-Pro team which would be affiliated with the Sounders.
* Even if that happens, the Sounders U-23 and Sounders Women teams would remain.
Also just spoke with Rainiers president Aaron Artman, who says ownership issues of a potential USL Pro team are to be considered down the road, along with the availability of dates with a Triple-A baseball team and USL Pro soccer team sharing the same stadium.
Seattle Sounders FC will host Orlando City SC of the USL Pro League in an MLS Reserve League match at Cheney Stadium on May 12 at 4 p.m., the club announced today. The match was originally scheduled for Starfire Sports. "Major League Soccer has embarked on an exciting partnership with the USL Pro," said Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. "This is a great opportunity for the two leagues to unite for the development of soccer in this country. Sounders FC will eventually have an operating partner in the USL. The city of Tacoma would be a fantastic location for us, and this game will give us a chance to test the market." Tickets to the match are available at www.TacomaRainiers.com or www.Ticketmaster.com, or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets start at $10 with discounts for senior citizens and military. Children three and under are free. Gates open at 3 p.m. "This is a great chance for Tacoma - and the greater South Sound - to show the Northwest how much we love soccer," said Aaron Artman, President of the Tacoma Rainiers. "The Sounders have done an incredible job rallying this entire region around soccer and their fan experience is the best in the business. We are thrilled to partner with them and look to showcase Cheney Stadium as a great soccer venue for this match and hopefully future matches in 2014 and beyond." The Tacoma Rainiers will also host a "Sounders Night" at Cheney Stadium on July 25 when they take on the Tucson Padres. Prior to the match, a Sounders FC player will throw out the first pitch. Tacoma will also wear a Rave Green Rainiers jersey which will be raffled off to support the five Sounders FC charity partners (Boys & Girls Clubs of King County and Bellevue, Special Olympics Washington, America Scores Seattle, Washington Global Health Alliance and Washington Youth Soccer). Sounders FC visits the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT with live coverage on KONG 6/16 and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM.
