Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani jogged on the side today, one day after missing training entirely due to a blood test.
However, after training coach Sigi Schmid clarified that the issue today is a groin injury and not anything to do with the blood-test results. Yet the groin injury apparently is significant enough where Zakuani's status for the Saturday game at Philadelphia isn't yet known.
"I didn’t mean to alarm the world when I said he needed to go in for a blood test," Schmid said. "It wasn’t anything major. So he was out here. Djimi did more today. Burch did more today. Now we’ll see how they do tomorrow. … (Zakuani) has a little bit of an injury in his groin area, so it matters how he came through today and how he feels tomorrow."
Schmid was asked if he expects to be able to choose from a full roster Saturday at Philadelphia.
Never miss a local story.
"I don’t know with those three guys: With Djimi and Steve and Burchy we’ll be able to decide more tomorrow," he said. "Ianni is still trying to work his way into fitness as well, so how much is he truly available or not available – so that’s another one that we have to look at."
Health issues aside, Schmid said he hopes to go with two regular central defenders this season, rather than rotating Hurtado, Traore and Ianni -- that is except when busy parts of the schedule make a third option a useful thing.
