A reminder that the Sounders Reserves meet Orlando City of USL-Pro at 4 p.m. today at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
Here's the preview story from today's News Tribune.
The story notes that first-team players such as Marcus Hahnemann, Lamar Neagle, Patrick Ianni, Leo Gonzalez, Mario Martinez, David Estrada, Servando Carrasco, Sammy Ochoa and first-round draft pick Eriq Zavaleta already have made appearances in Sounders Reserves matches.
It seems highly likely that Hahnemann will be in goal today, after sitting out yesterday's MLS match due to red-card suspension. And Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said yesterday that some of his injured players -- Steve Zakuani? Shalrie Joseph? Ianni? -- could dip their toes back into game-conditions today due to the more liberal substitution rules of the MLS Reserve League.
"A couple of guys who didn't play (Saturday) will be able to put some minutes ... at the reserve game because the reserve game is a different proposition," Schmid said. "You're allowed five subs, so if the guy plays 20 minutes or 30 minutes and feels it, he can come off the field, which is something you can't do in this sort of game. From that standpoint, we are getting healthier and (the reserve match) will give us a good check and balance as to how far some of the other players are."
It's expected, however, that the real star of the show will be Cheney Stadium -- home of Tacoma Triple-A baseball since 1960, and home in 1976 to the American Soccer League's Tacoma Tides -- which included a reserve goalkeeper named Bruce Arena.
Sounders U-23 also played a couple of matches there last season.
The stadium is just off Highway 16 a few miles west of Interstate 5.
