Montreal forward Marco Di Vaio was voted MLS player of the week today. I gave him my second vote, behind LA's Robbie Keane, who I thought somehow looked dangerous even above and beyond his hat trick plus assist.
Here's the news from the league:
Montreal Impact forward Marco Di Vaio was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 13 of the 2013 MLS season.
Marco Di Vaio led the Montreal Impact to an impressive 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Union, scoring a hat trick in a thirty-minute span during the first half. Di Vaio is now tied for first place in the Budweiser Golden Boot standings with nine goals.
Di Vaio opened up the scoring in the second minute when Andrew Wenger cut the ball back for Di Vaio whose left footed strike found the bottom left corner.
With the game tied at 1-1, Di Vaio struck again in the 28th minute when Justin Mapp lobbed a through ball to Di Vaio who brought it down in the center of the box and flicked it over Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath.
Di Vaio completed the hat trick four minutes later when Andres Romero sent in a cross to Di Vaio who deftly side-footed it into the back of the net.
The Montreal Impact take on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the final leg of the Amway Canadian Championship at BC Place this Wednesday (10:00 p.m. ET); the Impact return to MLS action on Saturday as they travel to Sporting Park to play Sporting Kansas City (8:30 p.m. ET).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
