Seattle Sounders FC lost one game and four players Saturday.
The scoreboard result was a 1-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
And along the way the Sounders lost midfielder Brad Evans, goalkeeper Michael Gspurning and defender Djimi Traore to injury. In the closing seconds of stoppage time, Seattle lost defensive midfielder Osvaldo Alonso to a red card, capping what had been the kind of chippy and heated game typical when these two sides meet.
The injury to Gspurning came in the 18th minute, when he grabbed a shot and when to the ground, where he was apparently kicked by San Jose’s Steven Lenhart who went in for a rebound.
Gspurning was tended to by the training staff, had his left wrist taped, and stayed in the game for the rest of the half.
However, in the second half he was replaced by Andrew Weber, who had been acquired on loan from third-division Phoenix just two days earlier. The move was necessary with regular No. 2 keeper Marcus Hahnemann and No. 3 Josh Ford out with injuries.
Just two minutes into the game, Weber was greeted with San Jose’s top offensive play of the night as Walter Martinez created some space with a fake on defense DeAndre Yedlin and fired inside the far post for what turned out to be the game-winner.
The Sounders best chance to equalize came in the 83rd minute when Eddie Johnson sent a head on goal, but it was hit directly at San Jose (6-9-6) goalkeeper Jon Busch, who handled it cleanly.
A total of 35 fouls were called during the game, and six cards were issued. The final was a red shown to Alonso in what had been his first game back after missing the better part of two months due to injury. Now, he will be out again for the next game, Saturday when Seattle (7-7-3) returns home against the Colorado Rapids.
The rib injury to Evans came in the 32nd minute and shortened what was his 100th regular-season appearance for Sounders midfielder Brad Evans. It's gone final: San Jose 1, Seattle 0.
Evans, Gspurning and Traore don't finish game due to injuries, Alonso doesn't finish due to red card.
