In today's second phase of the MLS Re-Entry draft, the Sounders selected forward Chad Barrett of New England in the first round, Vancouver forward Corey Hertzog in the second, and passed in the third.
General manager Adrian Hanauer yesterday listed forward as a position of interest for the Sounders.
The selection of Barrett and Hertzog doesn't make either player Sounders, but it gives the club the right to negotiate with them. (According to the league website: "Drafting clubs will be required to make a genuine offer to the player within seven days. In the event that an agreement cannot be reached between the drafting club and the out-of-contract player, the drafting club will hold the right of first refusal for that player in MLS. ... Clubs were allowed to select their own players in Stage Two only after all other clubs had declined to select those players. No club selected their own player in this draft.")

Seattle Sounders FC selected forwards Chad Barrett and Corey Hertzog in Stage Two of the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Process today. Seattle now has the rights to both players and may negotiate new contracts.
Barrett, 28, was selected by Seattle with its first pick (13th overall) from the New England Revolution. A nine-year MLS veteran, he scored two goals with two assists in 19 appearances for the Revolution in 2013. Barrett began his professional career with the Chicago Fire in 2005, and joined Toronto FC in 2008. He spent two seasons with the LA Galaxy (2011-12) before New England selected him in the 2012 Re-Entry Process. Overall, he has scored 44 goals with 29 assists in 211 career appearances.
"Chad is a hard-working forward who has good experience in MLS," said Sporting Director Chris Henderson. "He has a nose for the goal and is able to play multiple positions. Chad has represented the USA at multiple levels, including a cap with the full team. Sigi has coached Chad in the past with the youth national team."
Hertzog, 23, was selected by Seattle with its second pick (32nd overall) from the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. A Generation adidas product out of Pennsylvania State University, Hertzog was drafted 13th overall by the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He made five appearances over two seasons with the Red Bulls and started six of seven appearances for the Whitecaps in 2013, scoring one goal with one assist.
"Corey is a forward we followed while he was scoring goals at Penn State," said Henderson. "He has been a proven goal scorer in college and while on loan in the USL with Wilmington. His attacking movement is good and he has an instinct to find the ball in the penalty box."
